Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail
Reported: June 2024
The Hudson River Valley Greenway is a state agency created to preserve scenic, natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources covering 13 counties in the Hudson River Valley. Part of that initiative is a system of both land and water trails linking communities, parks, cultural and historic sites. Here we focus on land trails that are part of the Empire State Trail, about 210 miles from Manhattan to Albany, NY, along the Hudson River. The trails are mainly rail-trails with some on-road sections, passing through urban, suburban, and rural areas and woodlands. (Detailed map and photos below.)

This is a very diverse section of the Empire State Trail, ranging from bustling New York City to small towns to tranquil countryside. It incorporates several trails owned and operated by local entities, here are those along the route we've visited to date. There's a lot of history here as well - so much to see and do. For more detailed trip planning, there are many online resources available (see below, "Related Resources").
Manhattan Greenway Trail - Starting at Battery Park and running along the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge, about 12.5 miles. Paved, portions run roadside.
South and North County Trailways - 36 miles through Westchester County, paved. The rail-trails follow the route of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad.
Walkway Over the Hudson - Paved trail crosses a bridge spanning the Hudson River on the old (1889) Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge between Poughkeepsie and Highland, NY. It's the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge, 1.28 miles in length, 212 feet above the Hudson. 360 degree scenic views as it crosses the river.
Hudson Valley Rail Trail - Runs for 7 miles between Highland and New Paltz, NY, on an old New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad railbed. Paved, wide and well-maintained, with historic markers, benches, and fitness stations.
Wallkill Valley Rail Trail - Running 22 miles from Gardiner, through New Paltz, to Kingston, NY. Trail surface is gravel and crushed stone, some paved asphalt Crosses the Wallkill River and Rondout Creek over historic bridges with great views, and passes through woods, fields, and farming areas.
