Acadia National Park, Schoodic Peninsula...

The Quiet Side of Acadia National Park

The only part of Acadia National Park located on the mainland is on the Schoodic Peninsula. It shares stunning views as on Mount Desert Island, but is more remote (about an hour from the Visitor Center). The Loop Road and Schoodic Trails are bikeable. During summer months, the Island Explorer is a free shuttle (with bike racks) providing transportation around the peninsula.

Biking on Schoodic Peninsula

Schoodic Peninsula Loop Road
Winter Harbor to Schoodic Point

The Schoodic Loop Road is mostly one-way and runs about 10 miles within Acadia National Park (it extends outside the park boundaries, continuing as the 29-mile Schoodic National Scenic Byway). Starting from Winter Harbor, the route passes Frazer Point Picnic Area. It continues along the coast to Schoodic Point, with scenic overlooks along the way.

Schoodic Point

A 2-way road section leads to Schoodic Point at the southern end of the Peninsula. From the granite ledges, take in the stunning views of Cadillac Mountain and the unique basalt dikes (created by ancient volcanic activity).

Schoodic Bike Paths

The Schoodic Bike Paths are an 8.3 miles network of 16-foot wide gravel trails connecting Frazer Point, Wonsqueak Harbor, Bunker Harbor, Birch Harbor and Winter Harbor. The Schoodic Woods Campground is a good starting point and one of the easier sections to bike, some other sections are best for experienced bikers only. We visited a couple of trailheads on the eastern side of the peninsula. The trailheads are about a mile apart along the park road, they're connected via the Schoodic Bike Paths so one option (there are many) is to make it a 3-4 mile loop ride. Not having ridden this, we're not sure of the difficulty but look forward to checking it out on a future trip.
