Biking in Ohio

The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway runs 20 miles, mostly along the Hocking River between Athens and Nelsonville in southeast Ohio. The bikeway runs along an old Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad bed (which formerly was a tow path along the Hocking Canal). The trail connects Ohio University in Athens and Hocking College in Nelsonville, passing through Wayne National Forest, parks and conservation areas. The sections at the two ends are more commercial areas, but the middle from about miles 5 to 15 is very scenic. Paved, flat, an easy ride. One of a few trails open at night. Bike shops and rentals are available. (Detailed map and photos below.)

Biking on the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

Nelsonville Area

Robbins Crossing at Hocking College (a community college) in Nelsonville is a reconstructed 1850 settler community. If you're in Nelsonville over the weekend, a worthwhile stop is the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway - the original railroad line was founded in 1864, rides are offered on vintage railroad equipment.

Athens Area

The trail runs past Ohio University, the original state university (1804) and one of the oldest in the nation. The trailhead at mile 1.3 is on the eastern extension - this runs into Athens, close to the road and stores.
